Roughead, while Chief of Naval Operations, focused on military modernization including the adoption of measures to become more efficient in the use of energy and adapt to renewable energy use. His naval career includes several firsts including the first officer to command both classes of Aegis ships and Commander of the fleets in the Pacific and the Atlantic. He served as Commandant, United States Naval Academy and the Department of the Navy’s Chief of Legislative Affairs. Roughead’s awards include the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, Navy Distinguished Service Medal, Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and various unit and service awards. He is currently in residence as the Annenberg Distinguished Visiting Fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University, examining the critical role of the military as part of the American way of life. Roughead is a 1973 graduate of the United States Naval Academy. He became the 29th Chief of Naval Operations Sep. 29, 2007.
